Bike Touring

Easter 2007 saw me trying out bike touring for the first time and just to add a challenge to it, Chuck Stacey who was a good mate prior to this, decided to take me up some of the hilliest tracks in the Victorian High Country he could find, I am sure.

Chuck still is a great mate and I am looking forward to our next adventure. It's guaranteed to be an adventure when Chuck and I get together.

Chuck and myself at Lake Hovell. We are looking fresh as this was taken on the first day of a 3 day tour through the Victorian High Country, the hard way I'm sure. It felt like it was all up hill.

One of many breaks whilst climbing yet another hill.

More of the four wheel drive

I bought this four wheel drive (4wd) as a very standad Nissan Patrol. I bought it from the second owner of this vehicle. It was always garaged and very clean when I bought it. I bought it to tow our ski boat.

As water skiing is only a summer sport it wasn't long before I was using the vehicle for what it was made for. I started exploring the Victorian High Country in winter. Before I knew it I was addicted to four wheel driving.

Thanks to the internet I found out about the Pajero club challenge so with my brother as navigator I decided to give it a go.
The challenge was a 24 hour navigation challenge through the bush. We did quite well for our first time. I think we got 10th and the following year we got 4th in our category.

My standard 4wd wasn't quite up for the job and as I got more competitive so did the vehicle.

Plenty of dollars, time and beer later I ended up with a Nissan Patrol that was highly modified thanks to my wallet and a great mate, John Walsh, oh and C.U.B.

The modifications included a new V8 Chev motor, strengthened almost everything, bigger suspension, lifted body, bigger tyres, custom bull bar and side steps, highly modified 24 volt winch with Plasma rope. In the end I don't think there was a part of the car I hadn't worked on and many parts I'd be able to tell you the spanner size required to work on it.

After spending heaps of money and time on the vehicle I decided to sell it to pay for a house. I now spend my time working on the house and cycling.

Mark's Adaptors gear box adaptor. One of many things that needed to be changed to fit the new motor in.

The back quarter guards were cut for better clearance.

The new motor after John built it.

Plenty of time was spent in this garage.

Neil modifing the side steps. He also did the bull bar.

Checking and rechecking the suspension to make sure it would work without hitting anything.

The diff had to be moved forward 5mm and the bump stops extended to stop the diff from hitting the drag link.

John changing the axles.

John putting the diff back together after it was strengthed.

John checking over everything before we start the new engine.

The Team hat.

Note the beer on the side step. We spent a couple of late nights drinking beer and polishing the vehicle.

Out on a test drive.

More about Me.

As a teenager growing up and then into my early twenties I was never a very competitive person. This did change. I bought a Nissan Patrol four wheel drive when I was twenty two. I bought the four wheel drive to do some touring and I did plenty but it wasn't long before touring just wasn't enough. I took on a 24 hour navigational competition with my brother, Matthew, as navigator. We ended up in the top ten for our class. The following year we were back and got 4th in our class. After a couple of navigational competitions we decided to have a go at the Outback Challenge which is a mix of navigation and extreme four wheel driving which runs for a week. We did quite well in our class. Over a period of several years competiting the vehicle over went many modifications including a new V8 motor amoungst a huge list of things. As I was entering my thirties, my wallet was getting thinner and my waist was getting larger so I decided to part with the much loved four wheel drive and take on mountain biking. My first moutain bike competition was a crit at WestGate ran by FGP. I didn't do so well, I finished about 3rd last in my class. This just proved I had a lot more work to do so I went out and did it. Two years later I took out 1st place at Westgate. I now have many kilometers in the legs both from the mountain bike and from the road bike. Now I'd love to work on my running...

Hiking

Amoungst many of my interests is hiking. I don't get the chance to do much unfortunitly. Here are some photos of myself and a good mate, Danny Verbec whilst taking 6 days to hike around the South Coast of Tasmania.

Me taking it all in and enjoying a bite to eat

We had to fly in. It took us 6 days to walk out

Wake boarding

One of my many interests is wake boarding.

I never said I was good.

The four wheel drive

Just a little bit bogged. Chuck Stacey is getting the winch rope out. After a quick winch we drove out of here.
